Abstract

|
|
Since the earlist reports of tardive dyskinesia, a variety of involuntary movement disorders, in addition to the now well-known classical oral-buccal-lingual masticatory movements, have been described, including dystonia, akathisia, and
myoclonus.
The term tardive dyskinesia is used differently by different authors. In this article the term is used to encompass all forms of persistent dyskinesia due to neuroleptics, and it therefore includes not only tardive dyskinesia but also the variant
forms.
There now seems to be a consensus that tardive dystonia exists as distinct form of tardive dyskinesia, and with further study it may prove to have its own unique pathophysiology.
Tardive dystonia is usually quite disabling, therefore the main emphasis here will be on the clinical recognition, differential diagnosis, and treatment of tardive dystonia.
